The break

Dear friends... Thank you for understanding and never leave me alone. I had to take this one week brake so I could recover my energies and keep looking for the positive side of  everything in life.

My parents are back and they will stay until my birthday. So this month will be real good, for sure. It's always a party when they come.
We also have some new baby animals here. Death takes, life returns... It is really beautiful to watch this endless chain... I'll place some pictures so you can see my reason to be thankful.
Oh! And tomorrow I'll place the recipes for this week.

Sad days...

Sorry girl... I didn't mean to hurt you. I hope you know how much I love you and miss you.

Everything is quiet and sad today... No more annoying barks and dogs chasing each other around the house. Yesterday I ran over Goldie, one of our dear doggies... We took her to the emergency... But she didn't resist. I'm totally finished.
Sorry guys... No  more comments.

Brazilian Recipes II

First of all I'd like to thank all of you my wonderful friends for the great support you gave me. MSN took care of the guy who was bugging some girls (including me). We won't see him around anymore.
Now I'm having several problems with my DSL service, so if I'm not answering to you, it's not because I don't want, but because I cannot keep my conection enough time to do it.
Now, a week and one day delayed, here comes the next post about Brazilian Yummy Cookery.
I hope you enjoy!

Quentão de Vinho

Wine Quentão

(quentão means very hot)

Ingredients:

1 bottle of wine, any kind

1 ½ quarts water

12 cloves

6 cinnamon sticks

2 lemons, sliced in thin rounds

2 red apples cut in cubes

½ small ginger

½ cup sugar

 Prepare:

Boil water, cinnamon sticks, lemon, apples and sugar for 30 minutes. Cover and let brew about 1 hour. Strains. Add the wine and serve hot.

Pão de Queijo

Cheese Rolls

Ingredients:

1 package dry, granular yeast or 1 cake compressed yeast

1 cup warm milk

2 tablespoons sugar

2 teaspoons salt

¼ pound butter

3 slightly-beaten eggs

2 cups grated Muenster or Swiss cheese

Prepare:

Dissolve yeast in warm milk. Add sugar, salt, butter and slightly-beaten eggs. Let stand 10 minutes, and then add beer and 3 cups of sifted flour. Stir with a wooden spoon until bubbles appear. Add the cheese. Cover and set in a warm place to rise. When batter has doubled in shape, cut it down with a knife and knead in another 3 cups sifted flour. Knead well and then add the extra sifted flour (from 1 to 2 ¼ cups) until you have a smooth, elastic dough that does not stick to the hands. Cover and let rise again.  Shape into butter horn rolls by dividing into portions that will roll out into rounds about 10 inches in diameter and 3/8 inch thick. Brush with melted butter and cut into 12 pie-shaped wedges. Roll up each piece beginning with the wide end, stretching dough slightly as you roll. Lay straight or in a crescent shape on a greased cookie sheet with tip underneath to keep from unrolling. Cover, set in a warm place again to rise. Brush with melted butter or an egg yolk slightly diluted with milk. Bake about 20 minutes in a preheated 375° oven. Yields approximately 48 rolls.

Quindins de Yaya

Yaya or Iaia was the slaves’ way of addressing the young girls of the Big House, just as “Sinhá” – a contraction of “Senhora” – was used to address the mistress. The slaves also called the young girls “Sinhá Moça” which corresponds to “Missy”. Likewise, the masters were called “Sinhô” and their “Ioiô”.

The Quindim is a very sweet cupcake that was popular in the Big House of the sugar cane plantations in the North of Brazil. They were always available for either intimate meals or elaborate parties. Baked in small individual cupcake tins, such as the one for muffins, they are then inverted and served in the little paper cups frequently used in Brazil for serving many kinds of candies and cakes.

The Quindim is golden brown on top while the bottom is frozen, like gelatin.

Ingredients:

1 pound sugar

¼ pound butter

16 egg yolks

3 egg whites

1 grated coconut

Cloves

Cinnamon

Orange flower water

½ pound sifted all-purpose flour

Prepare:

Mix first eight ingredients very well and beat. Add flour and continue to beat thoroughly. Turn into buttered cupcake tins and bake in Bain Marie in 350° preheated oven. Yields 60.

Tropical Weather

Who is ever going to understand the weather in Brasilia? Anyway I love it! Today morning we were literaly cooking here. Such a boiling temperature. And now at the end of the afternoon it is raining... ICE... Yep, it is raining little ice stones, hahahaha. The girls had so much fun. Running outside with their rain coats. I love to see them playing in the rain. Maybe because when I was their age and use to live in Rio de Janeiro, I would always ask my mother to play outside during the first rainy days... I can still taste the salty drops between my lips. Yes salty, because of the sea. And the sweet scent of wet earth. Such an explosion of senses.Well, there are some new pics for you to enjoy.

How to recognize a Brazilian in USA?

They didn't know anything about bills until you came to the US.

They like Guarana better than Coke.

If someone tells them to be at a certain place at 1:00 p.m., they don't show up until 2:30 or 3:00 p.m.

They know who Xuxa and Pele are.

Their entire family goes to grandma's house on Sundays for a big family get together....even when those guys see each other everyday.

BBQ means steak, picanha, sausage, chicken wings, pork, rice, farofa, vinagrete sauce and samba.

They are the loudest people in the room.

They got a Brazilian flag hanging from your car's rearview mirror.

They travel to Brazil and instead of taking a suitcase with all their stuff, they take presents for the entire family, the dog, the neighbor, not to mention the old/used clothes that they take just in case someone needs it.

They live in Florida, New York, New Jersey, or Massachusetts.

They leave their house spotless when they have people coming over.

An ideal woman is a woman with small breasts and a big butt.

They understand & speak Spanish, but when they say a word in Portuguese no one understands them.

They can dance.

Their jokes are always about Portuguese people.

They take soccer too seriously.

They go to a birthday party, and they can't leave until they take that piece of cake home.

They know a lot about Samba and Pagode (kind of samba).

They have studied the history of almost every country.

They eat rice and beans at least 7 days a week.

Their breakfast consists of milk and coffee, bread with butter, ham, cheese and a piece of cake with a glass of juice.

Everyone thinks they're everything but Brazilian.

They are so used to corruption that nothing surprises you anymore.

They know how to play dominoes and cards.

They don't care about race or color. And once they come to the US, they realize what racism means.

They have a sense of fashion.

They wear slippers…a lot!

Their bikinis fit inside of a fist.

They have the “Brazilian wax” every 20 days, including legs and arm bids too.

They go to the manicure every week and ask to take off the cuticles too.

They know how to play volleyball and handball.

They always like taking pictures everywhere they go.

They invent parking lots.

They know what it's like to buy liquor without an ID.

They know how to party, and if the party isn't over after 5 a.m....it's not a party!

Any holiday...being it official or not, is an excuse to stay home from work and take a week vacation.

They dress up to go to the supermarket.

They spend an entire day at the beach.

They rarely use sunblock.

They talk to strangers everywhere.

They are too friendly.

Thanks to Seven Castles for most of the above

The perfect match

It is right that we have the possibility to find a soul mate. Why not to work for this date to happen? It is not to start looking for it now! This union starts from us. By the moment we start an education so we can reach the best of ourselves, we are favoring this union. Therefore we become more illuminated and this fact places us in highlight so everybody can see us and admire what they see. Admiration yes! Why this thing of not wanting to be somebody who could be admirable? Without false modesty, we must love ourselves first so we’ll have love enough to give.

Where to start then?

I consider the existence of a tripod that sustains a good relationship:

Self-esteem and chemistry:

Love for yourself and permanent investment in spiritual, mental and physical improvements. Sexual compatibility and satisfaction that leads to an unity.

Culture and mental compatibility:

Similar level of culture can keep a fluent and interesting dialog. This dialog allows intimacy and sharing of ideas. For that, a mental compatibility is also necessary. When the personality of the other fills the holes in the own and there is an acceptance of the human limitations, the link is made and a strong complicity starts.

Goals for life and independence:

You got to do what you got to do and your mate can not interfere if it’s not to add and vice-versa. A similar family orientation also helps in this case. The fact is that both need to do what pleases them for life, BUT… Thinking always as a unity and keeping also their individual lives. Moments apart mean also many news to tell. Having different circles of friendship, work and other activities keep the mistery and magic.

It’s necessary to get to a common sense without hurting each other feelings.

ATTENTION!

NOBODY CHANGES PERSONALITY OF THE OTHER!

IT’S A MISTAKE TO TRY!

It always leads to pain and humiliation… you need to analyze from the beginning … Do you love each other with all faults? If not… This is already a red flag... You also have to be prepared to accept the faults that come up later.

Medo de voar - Afraid to fly

Do you know these days when you know you have to do something, but you don't have the courage to do it? Even knowing after taking this step everything will be easier? To leave a bad job, to finish a saturated relationship, to say NO to somebody you love, demand promises not  carried on, to fight for your rights... Quite difficult tasks,  but only until you firmly decide to go on with them. It is like having wings projected by our daddy from Heaven to reach the highest clouds and even then to be afraid of giving the first step out of the cliff... I know it gives you chills... But God helps! He is always there to support us... It might feel like you would be falling for a while, maybe you'll bump against some twigs of trees because of your inexperience, but never give up on trying to flap your wings. Your flight will be a bit weird in the beginning, but you will have more and more chances to improve it. With time this will be so fluent, that the chills will become a delicious thrill and your wings will become stronger and faster.
So, don't wait anymore... Open your eyes and jump to your success and happiness.

Não importa o que aconteça, a vida continua - No matter what happens, life goes on

E enquanto a vida me der presentes,  eu seguirei caminhando e cantando e seguindo a canção...
Vejam que belo exemplo eu tenho no álbum que contem fotos que fiz ainda hoje.

The Nature helps me to reformulate my thoughts and see life with a more positive perspective. While I worry with money and plans for the future, life is still happening. See, around me animals are birthing and growing, another spring is coming with its friendly days and warm evenings. My daughters grow and day by day have a better domain over their ideas and thoughts. My tendency to egocentrism, only takes me to isolation from all those gifts life gives me. So far, let the problems come! For all of them should have a solution. And while life keeps giving me those gifts, I'll keep walking and singing and following the song...
Take a look what a beautiful example I have at the album that has pictures I made today yet.

A NOSSA FLORESTA AMAZÔNICA

 OUR AMAZON FOREST

During a discussion in an university, in the United States, the former governor of the Federal District of Brazil and former minister of Education CRISTOVAM BUARQUE was questioned about what he thought of the internationalization of the Amazon Forest. The young American introduced its question saying that he expected the reply of a humanist and not of a Brazilian.

This was the reply of Mr. Cristovam Buarque:

"In fact, as Brazilian I simply would speak against the internationalization of the Amazon Forest. Even if our governments do not have the proper care with this patrimony, it is ours. As humanist, feeling the risk of the ambient degradation that suffers the Amazon, I can imagine its internationalization, as also of everything else than it has importance for the humanity. If the Amazon, under an ethical humanist, must be internationalized, also internationalize the oil reserves of the entire world... The oil is as important to well-being of the humanity as the Amazon to our future. Despite this, the owners of the reserves feel themselves in the right to increase or to diminish the extraction of oil and to increase or not its price. The same way, the financial capital of the rich countries would have to be internationalized. If the Amazon is a reserve for all the human beings, it cannot be burnt by the will of an owner, or of a country. To burn the Amazon is as serious as the unemployment provoked by the arbitrary decisions of the global speculators. We cannot allow that the financial reserves serve to burn entire countries in the lust of the speculation. Even before the Amazon, I would like to see the internationalization of all the great museums of the world. The Louvre does not have to belong only to France. Each museum of the world is a guardian of the most beautiful pieces produced by the human mind. It’s not possible to let this cultural patrimony, as the Amazonian natural patrimony, either be manipulated or destroyed for the taste of a proprietor or a country. Not long ago, a Japanese millionaire decided to burry with himself a piece of a great master. Before this, that piece should have been internationalized. During this current meeting, the United Nations are in the Forum of the Millennium, but some presidents of countries had had difficulties in appearing because of some constraints in the frontier of U.S.A.. Therefore, I think that New York, as headquarters of the United Nations, should be internationalized. At least Manhattan should belong to all the humanity. As well as Paris, Venice, Rome, London, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Recife, each city, with its specific beauty, its history of the world, should belong to the entire world. If U.S.A. wants to internationalize the Amazon, because of the risk of leaving it in the hands of Brazilians, we should internationalize all the nuclear armories of U.S.A. Even more because they already had demonstrated that they are capable to use these weapons, provoking destruction that was thousands of times bigger than the lamentable forest fires made in the forests of Brazil. I defend the idea of exchanging the internationalization of the forests reserves of the world for the debts of the countries. Let us start using these debts to guarantee that each child of the World has possibility TO EAT and to go to the school. Let us internationalize the children treating them, all of them, no matter the country where they had been born, as patrimony that deserves care of the entire world. Poor children of the world as a patrimony of the Humanity, they should live. As humanist, I accept to defend the internationalization of the world. But, as long as the world treats me as a Brazilian, I will fight for the Amazon to be ours. Only ours! "

Meu Brasil Brasileiro, My Brazilian Brazil

Let me talk a bit about Brazil. And this is addressed also to my compatriots.

Brazil is not only the country of Amazon Forest and hot women with well built bodies.

Brazil is also:

1. The only Country in the world where you can simultaneously fill up the tank of a car with Gasoline, Alcohol and  next year also with Natural Gas For Vehicles. Each of those things with national technology.

2. Its going to be the first Country in the world to develop biodiesel, from a plant called mamona. Again with national technology. It will be the redemption of North East, since mamona is a plague over there. Petrobras (Brazilian Petroleum Company) is already starting to develop the productive system.

3. The most modern industries of automobile production – General Motors, Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen Trucks are here too.

4. Among other things, Petrobras is the only company in the world which has the complete technology to extract petroleum from deep waters.

5. The steel industry is working at full capacity.

6. The USA finally surrender to the quality of our airplanes (Embraer) and will buy highly specialized airplanes for the training of their Air Force.

Now the data from Antropos Consulting:

1. Brazil is the most successful country in the combat against AIDS and other sexual transmissible diseases and is world-wide example.

2. It is the only country in the Southern Hemisphere to participate in the Genoma Project.

3. In a research involving 50 cities from many countries, the city of Rio de Janeiro was considered the most solidary.

4. In the elections of the year 2000 the System of the Electoral Regional Court was computerized in all 26 States plus the Federal District of Brazil, having the results in less than 24 hours.

5. Even being a country in development, Brazil represents 40 % of the internet users in the Latin American market.

6. There are 14 Industries of automobiles installed and more 4 coming. While some neighbor countries don’t have any.

7. 97,3% of children and teenagers are studying.

8. The cellular phone market of Brazil is the second in the world with 650 thousand new habilitations per month.

9. Brazil is in fifth position of fixed line phone installations in the world.

10. 6890 Brazilian companies have the ISO 9000 quality certificate. While México has only 300 and  Argentina 265.

11. Brazil is the second biggest market of executive helicopters and airplanes in the world.

12. Brazil is the second biggest distribution of credit cards terminals in the world.

13. AmBev (America Beverage Company), also Brazilian, is the biggest company of beverage in Latin America and the seventh biggest in the world.

14. Officially, a Brazilian named Santos Dumont was the inventor of the first airplane that flied in the skies.

COMMENTS OF A DUTCH ABOUT BRAZIL:

The Brazilians think the whole world is better than Brazil. And it really seems that it is a bad habit to speak badly about Brazil. Every place has its positive and negative aspects, but in other countries people maximize the positive, while in Brazil people maximize the negative. Here in Holland, the results of the elections delay horrors because it does not have anything automatized. There is only one telephone company and if you complain about the service, you are taking the risk of having your telephone temporarily disconnected.

In the United States and Europe, nobody has the habit to wrap the sandwich with a napkin - or to wash the hands - before eating. In most European bakeries, fairs and butcheries, the attendants receive the money and deliver the bread or the meat with the same dirty hand. In London, there is a very famous place that sales french-fries wrapped up in newspaper - and people make a line at the door.

In Europe, non-smokers are a minority. If asked for a non-smoker table, the waiter laughs at you, because there is no separate area for people who do not smoke. They even smoke in elevators. (In Brazil the law forbids you to smoke in public places) In Paris, the waiters are known by their bad mood and coarseness. Any waiter of a tavern in Brazil could give lessons about “How to conquer a Customer".

Do you know how powerful nations destroy less powerful nations? They impose their beliefs and culture. If you have a closer look, in all movies produced by U.S.A., their national flag appears, and generally in very emotional parts of the movie.

Brazilian language has almost nothing to do with the Portuguese language, but it is called Portuguese language, anyway. Software companies around the world call it Brazilian Portuguese, because they cannot communicate with their Brazilian costumers through the Portuguese language. (Andreas’s comment about that: according to the Portuguese Language Orthographic Agreement of 1990 signed by 7 Portuguese speaking countries it was agreed to adapt the orthography mostly to the Brazilian variation of the language.)

Brazilians are victims of crimes against their native land, beliefs, culture, language, etc. But most of the cultured Brazilians know they have many reasons to rescue their cultural roots.

Why this bad habit of speaking badly about Brazil?

Why not to be proud in saying that the book publishing market is bigger than of  the one of Italy, with more than 50 thousand new titles every year? Or why not mention that Brazil has the most modern banking system of the planet? Or that the Brazilian advertising agencies win the best and biggest prizes world-wide almost every year? Why not say that Brazil has the most entrepreneurs in the world, with more than 70% of Brazilians, either rich or poor people, dedicating a considerable part of their time in voluntary work? Why not to say that Brazil is today the third biggest democracy in the world? That even after all disgrace, the Brazilian Congress is punishing its own members, when appropriate,  which rarely occurs in other “said” civilized countries? Why not to remember that Brazilian people are hospitable, don’t spare efforts to speak the language of the tourists, make mimics and take the best care of them? Why not to be proud of being a folk who makes jokes about its own disaster and that faces its disgusts dancing samba. Brazil is a blessed country in fact. Blessed are these people, who have a way to unite all the races, of all the creeds. Blessed are these people, who understand all accents. Blessed are these lands, which offer all kinds of weather to please all people. Blessed is - beloved native land - Brazil!

1. O único país do mundo onde se pode abastecer simultaneamente um carro com Álcool, Gasolina e no próximo ano também com gás natural veicular. Tudo isso, com tecnologia nacional;

2. Será o primeiro país do mundo a desenvolver o biodiesel, à base de mamona. Novamente tecnologia nacional. Será a redenção do Nordeste, pois a mamona é praga por lá e a Petrobrás já está começando desenvolver o sistema produtivo;

3. As fábricas mais modernas de produção de automóvel - General Motors e Mercedes Benz e Volkswagen Caminhões, também estão aqui;

4. Entre outras coisas, a Petrobrás é a única empresa do mundo à deter a tecnologia completa de produção de petróleo em águas profundas;

5. As empresas produtoras de aço estão instaladas em sua capacidade máxima;

Summer mornings

Fantastically beautiful sunny mornings are showing up everyday since a week ago. Seems the summer is finally here. It is so gorgeous to see how life blooms in those days. Everything is thankful to the caressing arms of the sun and freshness of summer rains. In the early morning we can here this magic symphony of Nature. And the scents… Ah! The scents are explosive stimuli to joy and pleasure. Flowers, fruits, herbs, everything mixed with the perfect alchemy of mystical spirits. Now I’m going outside and take some picture to share with my dear friends. I hope I can warm your hearts and bring a sweet smile to your faces.

First tooth

My little Clara lost her first tooth... Oh Dear…I miss them so much. They were at the beach when Clara tried to open the valve of her bubble (those things they use in their arms so they can float when in the water) with her teeth. Then from this little tooth that was already lose, last only a piece of the root that was really bugging her. My mother took her to the dentist and there they made an agreement (the Dentist and my little flower). He said she should not fear because it would not hurt, but just in case… She should rest her arms on the arms of his chair and lift up the hand if she would feel any discomfort. Then he said she would need an anesthesia because the tooth was still a bit attached to the root. She agreed and when he gave the injection the first lift up the little hand and then she cried… But not hard, just a bit. The dentist and my mother got so proud of her. She was a very brave little girl. Then she came back home carrying her tooth and saying she would place it right under her pillow, so the Tooth’s Fairy would bring her a coin to trade for it. Now you can check up there the pictures of the story.

New year

Why is that that we have renewed forces when we start a new year? But the thing is that, it really works… January and February are the limit date for some projects I have in my mind. If it doesn’t work I’m going to start looking for other alternatives. But for now, that is it. I have to keep my mind straight and focused.

January is also a good month because I’ll have my girls back home. God, I miss them! For years we wonder if we want or not to have children and when they come… Well, when they come you quickly realize your life has no sense without them.

So this week is still an awakening for me… Let’s see what’s coming next. Faith and courage!

My feelings about these remaining days to the end of the year are good, I guess. It was a very tough year, with many obstacles I could pass through, but not without scars. Now I feel like 2006 is a year of recovering, recharging my batteries. It’s a year to take care of myself. To come back in shape, take care of my skin, come back to do all girly stuff I love so much and didn’t have any time or money to do so.  I feel tired and destroyed for the battles, but pleased with the results anyway. Now it’s time for harvesting the time and peace to take care of myself. So, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be another tough year, but now I’ll be working on my self-esteem. I already feel good about it. I’m that kind of person who always falls in a bad cycle of depression because of my weaknesses. So I’m working to break the cycle now. And I know I’ll be successful. It is just a matter of rhythm.  Routine for everything and little prizes for every new conquer.

My Brazilian Drink from every morning...

Chimarrão or cimarron is a South American traditional ethnic beverage.

Since I'm a gaúcha, this is my every day drink from the morning. It is bitter, strong and hot. Smells like childhood for me. Brings me memories of my days with my whole family together. Sweet memories, warming my mornings.

Chimarrão is a strong infusion prepared from yerba mate ("erva mate" in Portuguese) and very popular in Rio Grande do Sul (a state in southern Brazil) and neighboring countries. Its preparation requires some practice and a special gourd recipient called a "cuia" through a special metal straw called "bomba." It is usually drunk in groups, but in the same "cuia". People habitually drink chimarrão early in the morning or in the evening. There are some customary rules to drink it, such as:

1. The person who prepares the chimarrão is the first one to drink.

2. When one member of the group finishes his drink, he has to fill it up with hot water and offer it (while holding the "cuia" with the right hand) to the next person.

3.You can't drink a half "cuia": it is necessary to drink everything before passing the "cuia" to the next person.

Chimarrão is prepared as a tea with Ilex Paraguariensis herb; its origins come from the Guarani people.

Thank you my friends... For waiting

OK, so close to complete a month without any posts here am I… I hope you, dearest friends, can understand my over stress about many things that happened. Some were extremely sad, like the death of my dog, and some were upsetting, like realizing I’m about to complete 4 years without any vacations or holidays. My kids went on vacations to my mom’s house and they will stay there the whole month. I miss them like a piece of my body. Andreas, my love is doing everything he can to make me happy. And he is doing a great job here. I didn’t have time to feel lonely because he is always creating amazing stories for my amusement. Some things this man does are completely crazy, but I can only thank God for this angel in my life.

Talking about angels made remember of my wounds, oh yep… Almost forgot to tell you. 2 days ago I was caressing my dog when I got the hugest bite I ever thought I could get. No, it was not my dog that bit me. It was a dog named Angel (more likely named by me as Devil). This bastard bit me just because he was jealous. He just came and attacked me. “Devil” was not supposed to be in my house, because as all of you should know, I don’t have bad educated animals. But since he is the same breed as Sissy (the remaining dog of Andreas), we decided do try and have some puppies from them. So I lent him from a friend for a month. In the end neither the dog got pregnant from him nor could I avoid my arm to get chewed by the beast.

Anyway… Now I’m in forced brake time for at least a week because I cannot use my hand for any purpose. Not even to drive. Oh, yes! Talking about driving… There comes the cute news… My baby bought me a pink beetle as a Christmas present and I’m so very happy driving it around the city. Everybody waves at me and smiles, hahahaha.  He also gave me an awesome bike as a birthday present (so I can lose my extra pounds until the carnival) and I bought him a very special horse as Christmas present. The name of the horse is Safado (means Naughty in Portuguese). I want you all check the pictures in my album. We are having lots of fun with our presents.  Safado was a mistreated horse from a very bad man. The moment I saw him I fell in love with him. A skeleton... But so tame and sweet. I knew that would be the horse for my baby. I’m going to make him fat and strong and with his gorgeous colors he will be for sure the most beautiful horse around here.

So tonight I want to thank all of you who never gave up on this crazy Brazilian here. I love you, crazy gringos! All of you!

CAIPIRINHA OF WINE

INGREDIENTS:

2 lemons

4 tablespoon sugar

¼ cup white wine dry

½ cup crushed ice

SERVING SIZE: 1 glass.

The slaves in the colonial Brazil created the "Feijoada".

They started cooking the pork meats that Farmland owners discarded such as ear, tails, feet in a big pot with black beans.

This dish became traditional all over the country. Since then, the dish was incremented with pork sirloin and sausages that transformed the menu in a famous entrée that everybody who visit Brazil have to taste.

The following recipe is an easy-to-do version of "Feijoada" made only with pork tenderloin and sausages.

This recipe is preferred for busy people that  don't want to handle the salted pork ears,  tails and feet found in the complete "Feijoada".

INGREDIENTS

1 lb of varied pork sausages (prefer smoked sausages)

1 lb of pork tenderloin

some slices of bacon

1 can of black beans (15.5Oz)

2 tbs vegetable oil

salt, garlic, chopped onions and bay leaves (bay leaves give a special taste to feijoada)

PREPARE

Feijoada is made with black beans and pork meats.

You can use a can of beans already cooked or learn how to cook in the recipe I posted right after this one.

Add black beans to a medium-sized pot with 2 tbs oil, salt, garlic, chopped onions and about 6 bay leaves.

Cook for about 15 minutes in med heat and set aside.

In a separated panfry, cook cubes of pork tenderloin and slices of bacon with salt, garlic.

Add all the sausages sliced and stir medium-heat until dry all the water.

Add the cooked meat to the pan with the black beans and your feijoada is ready!

Cook your feijoada more 10 minutes to meat soak in the black beans. You can add some pepper sauce to your feijoada at this point.

Hint: to make the feijoada creamy, liquefy 1/2 cup of black beans in the blender and add to the feijoada.

SERVE:

Before serving the "Feijoada", you can serve a caipirinha as an appetizer.

Feijoada is a main dish frequently served with white rice, collard greens and seasoned manioc flour (farofa).

To follow the "Feijoada", we serve orange segments as a dessert.

How to cook dried beans:

It used to take hours to cook dried beans, not anymore. Using a pressure pan, you can cook red beans, pinto beans and black beans in 20 minutes.

First, let 1lb of beans soaked in water overnight. It will make the beans easier to cook and make beans less gassy as well.

Drain beans and place them on the pressure cooker.

Cover beans with tap water. (Water level should be 1 inch above the beans).

Close the pressure cooker and place in medium heat.

Your beans are ready 20 minutes after the regulator starts to blow steam.

Hint:

Always add seasoning after the beans are cooked.

Count cooking time when the regulator starts to blow steam.

Bolinho de chuva is traditional all over Brazil. It is served for breakfast or tea time. The recipe bellow is for the sweet version. You can also make a salty bolinho de chuva by replacing the sugar with one teaspoon of salt and some chopped green onions.

Either way, sweet or salty they are delicious. When you deep fry them they get some crunchy peaks that are fun to eat. Bolinho de chuva means “donut of rain”. And they are best when fresh. So, if you want them for breakfast, prepare them in the same day, they are easy to do. You can have your Brazilian donuts done in about 30 minutes.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup all purpose flour

1/2 cup corn starch

2 tsp baking powder

1/2 cup milk

2 eggs

4 tbs granulated sugar

Pinch of salt

Oil to deep fry or shortening.

Sugar with cinnamon to sprinkle over.

PREPARE

In a large bowl, mix in the eggs, sugar and pinch of salt. While mixing with a wood spoon add the flour, corn starch, baking powder and milk until you get a batter similar to cake batter.

Preheat the fryer to 350 degrees F, using two table spoons, take a spoon of batter and scrape off the batter into the fryer using the second spoon. Fry about six doughnuts each time until golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes, flipping just once for overall browning. (The doughnut will flip by itself). Remove the doughnuts from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Sprinkle with powdered sugar with cinnamon and serve.

Hint: The fryer temperature is very important. If it is too hot, the doughnuts will burn outside and be doughy inside.

Makes about 25 doughnut balls. Kids will love it.

INGREDIENTS:

1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk

1 tablespoon margarine

3 tablespoon cocoa powder

COOK:

Over medium-low heat, stir vigorously the sweetened condensed milk, margarine and cocoa powder.

Cook the mixture until it thickens enough to show the pan bottom during stirring.

Pour the mixture in a greased dish and let it cool to room temperature. Take small amounts of the mixture with a teaspoon and make 1 ½ inch balls.

Roll the balls over chocolate jimmies to decorate.

Hint: Grease your hands with margarine to make the balls easily.

If the balls don't hold the shape and flat down like coins, it means that you did not cook enough. Cook additional five minutes, take a small sample and dip it in a glass with cold water. If you cooked enough, this sample should hold the shape after cooling down in the water.

SERVE:

Place the balls in candy cups to serve.

They are great for birthday parties.

SERVING SIZE: 40 candies.

This candy is named after a renowned Brazilian politician of the 1920's, Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes. He was an Air Force brigadier general who first gained notoriety for playing a part in quashing a communist coup in Rio. He later ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 1946 and 1950, during a brief breeze of democracy which blew after WWII in Brazil.

The name of the candy is that of his rank, Brigadeiro. Now, why would anyone name candy after an army general?

Well, back in 1922, he was tall, dark-haired with blue eyes. AND SINGLE!!!

The Brigadeiro campaign slogan was “Vote  Brigadeiro who is handsome and single”.

Or the other version  “Brigadeiro Brigadeiro, he is better because he is single”.

Then, this candy was created by some ladies from Rio de Janeiro. And they named the candy after the Brigadeiro. This was a time of shortage of traditional imports such as nuts and European fruits because of the WWII. But in the same time, Nescau ™ was introduced in the country.

Therefore, one might say that the creation and success of this candy was a combination of opportunities. The multinational who introduced chocolate powder, had the help of cookers who named it after a famous politician and the need of the time to find replacement to traditional imported sweets.

Today, brigadeiro candy is a must have in any birthday party and kids love them.

In time, Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes lost the presidential campaign to Marechal Eurico Gaspar Dutra, who was not that handsome.

Moreover, as far as we know, there is no candy named after Marechal Dutra. Which shows once more how Brazilian women can be naughty, but they are not stupid.
